Layout Marathon Suggestions
This is the official Layout Marathon Suggestion thread!
If you have any ideas for layout marathons you would like to see run, or if you want to volunteer to run one yourself on these boards, please just
leave a comment. It's a good way to be involved and to get feedback from other people as well.
Hope you all participate in the upcoming marathon!

I really wanted to do a late 90's style webdesign layout marathon or a joke layout marathon. I thought those would be funny but I didn't get much
positive feedback on either idea. ._. The 90's style would revolve around things like iframes or layers. I need to save a bunch of the layouts that I
liked from that era as examples.

I remember some time last year Todd was talking about having a MS Paint layout marathon. If it comes to fruition, I'd be happy to run it The only thing I'm worried about is that it might single out Mac users (since I don't
know if Macs have an equivalent program).

My only worry is that a lot of newer designers are unfamiliar with "old" style layouts. Also, if people are using them for their main
collectives/portals, it may cause a lot of issues for visitors, etc (not the most browser/user friendly type of layouts). There is a reason why HTML
and CSS have grown out of them! It could be fun to do something like this for people's layout archives maybe? Or smaller pages, like contact forms or
link portals?

I think this sounds like a great idea! I would love for you to run this, perhaps after the LOVE! Marathon, or a little later to give people some
breathing room?
I have a Mac, and while there isn't a MS Paint program equivalent that I'm aware of (correct me if I'm wrong, anyone), we could just use the free form
tool in Photoshop as a substitute?

I'd definitely be up to doing so! Feel free to contact me whenever about it
Since the Love! Marathon ends on March 14, perhaps this one can run from April or May til the next month for breathing room? (Or perhaps later than
that, if you guys wanted.)

That sounds great. I think some breathing room might be good, so April/May is a good date. We'll think about this closer to the time!

It doesn't exactly have to revolve around iframes. There's lots of ways to achieve the same effects using better methods. But I know a lot of stuff I
used to use a long time ago just doesn't work in modern browsers. For example, chromelss popups, and popups in general.
But there are design elements that can be achieved using modern methods. For example, splash pages, dropdown menus, the "grid" or "scanlines"
effect.
Maybe some of us who have been around a long time can compile a whole bunch of examples of both our things and stuff from our favorite sites that have
long since closed?
It doesn't even have to be a 90's theme, but maybe something from more than 5 or 6 years ago. We could also make a post outlining and explaining ideas
and concepts so that everyone could understand. I think it would be a fun idea. :D

Oh yeah, those are good too. :3 I remember talking to someone and to get the iframes effect they just used div layers (that was years ago) and it left
me confused at the time because I had no idea what they were.
I think a sort of nostalgia marathon would be great. I know some people think about it and cringe but I have a special place in my heart for those
layouts using scan lines and glowing text. ;D

I still think pop up layout are kind of cute, but yeah, they often get blocked. Ads have ruined them. Remember the colorful backgrounds with the pictures that repeated over and over? XD Those were so common back then,
I'm talking why back. It's like there were no real layouts per-se, just a background and colors, and tables were the most amazing thing. Then came the
famous iframes. Wow, makes me feel old, though I know I'm not the oldest in Amassment, but certainly not the youngest.

Actually, if you look at what I'm using at valkyrie.nu, you can actually achieve the same effect as a popup without having popup blockers. You'd just
need to include a little thing to say "hey, enable javascript for my domain plz" and I have a tutorial for that. :D It's sort of like the chromeless
popup minus all the bad stuff with it. XD
Anyway, I'm totally up for a nostalgia marathon. Maybe we can get together and assemble some examples/screenshots so that people can reference it and
get ideas?

I've seen similar windows, mostly in galleries. I've made the regular javascript popups, but haven't experimented with this kind. Now you've made me
curious. XD
