Dark anime recs?

I actually got in the mood to watch some anime today. I looked up horror recommendations because I really like the Parasyte manga and it was horror, so by "dark" I mean horror or action-based.

Somebody recommended Gantz which actually had a really good story, but it constantly and needlessly flashed boob-shots and gore. I can take the gore, no problem, and I can take occasional nudity if it's relevant to the story, but I feel like the boobs were being shown just to be shown. I'm not sure if I'll continue watching the anime, because I actually really like the characters and story, like I said. It's a fascinating idea, really.

But yeah, I was wondering if you guys had anime recommendations? I prefer horror or action series, as opposed to animes focused only on romances, and I would prefer a relatively short series (a season or two) as opposed to an ongoing one.

lol my fav dark is GANTZ and Monster (which you should totally read).

gantz is awesome, but yeah, the boobs and stuff gets annoying, I love the story, so I just got in a habit of tuning it out. Oku Hiroya lessens up on the boob fanservice later on though, which is good...

And Monster is another thrill manga. I ended up reading it around my midterms because I couldn't stop reading D: Where GANTZ was more of a thrill in the sense you're on a dangerous ride, Monster is a thrill in the sense that it has a lot of intrigue, and there's a lot of dark secrets. Nothing's what it seems.

Those would be my dark recs anyway. xD

I would recommend Mnemosyne, but since you don't like the boobshots for the sake of boobshots, I wouldn't. It's a very sexual anime, and I think Wikipedia classifies it as eroguro, which I don't know if I agree with.

Otherwise, I would recommend Black Lagoon, which is a mature action anime that I love, Ergo Proxy, and Jigoku Shoujo. Jigoku Shoujo is a love it or hate anime, I think, but I really enjoy it.

SECONDING BLACK LAGOON FOREVER. 8Db

Also, you really should check out Hellsing, although I've only read most of the manga so I'm not sure how the anime is.

On the horror (or terror) end of the spectrum, I'd recommend titles like Boogiepop Phantom (haunting and psychological), Teizokurei Daydream (though there's a good deal of sexual content in this one in addition to graphic violence), Red Garden (along the lines of the traditional gothic) and Kemonozume (very different art style but a very worthwhile series). You might also enjoy Night Head Genesis and Mononoke.

All of these series are relatively contained (the longest is 24 episodes) and are not ongoing. I'd also totally agree with all the other recs so far - great series!

Out of curiousity, do you always like psychological horror? They aren't much "action" packed, but they can be distrubing. One in particular that comes to mind is Paranoia Agent - a mystery sort of anime that runs only 13 episodes long, and yet is filled with twisted stories of victims who dealt with problems in their lives, eventually "cured" by "Lil' Slugger", who may not be a real person at all.

I also could reccommend Monster and Elfen Lied. Elfen Lied may have a large amount of nudity, lots of gore, and occasional fanservice, but they are all for a point to show the innocence and frailty of mutant girls who only drive to kill because they were corrupted of mankind's evilness. Two in particular do not want to kill at all, and yet suffer from various cruelty situations.

You might also like After School Nightmare (it's only a manga), which is about a boy, who thought he was a boy, but is actually genderless. His only hope to become a real boy is to undergo an afterschool "dream" class. Meanwhile, he is smitted with others of both sexes, and stumbles upon other classmates' psychological traumas represented in the dreams.

Thanks for the recs, guys!

@Shiori - I have actually watched some of Red Garden, and I like it a lot so far. Also, thanks for recommending short stuff! I kind of want to slowly get into anime, and not jump into a huge ongoing story,

@tsunderes and Larissa - People aren't going to rest until I pick up Black Lagoon, are they? lol

@Masao - I am continuing Gantz. I am basically doing what you do and looking past that stuff. You're not the first to recommend Monster to me, so I will definitely check that out.

Varen - I love most horror. It's my favorite genre. I think I get it from my aunt, because we used to always watch horror movies together. I generally don't like Vampire stuff though unless it's really unique because it's been overplayed so much. I do like Psychological stuff. Things I get into aren't always necessarily horror, though, so if you think of anything that's not horror that you think I'll like, send it my way. I love character relationships in stories and shows, but I don't like reading stories and watching shows that are ONLY about the relationship, you know? That's the kind of stuff I avoid. You make a third person to recommend Monster, so that's probably next. I'll also check out Paranoia Agent.

Definitely Soul Eater since one scene made me want to not watch because of how terrifying it is. I had to bring up a damn cd case close to my eyes just in case because of how they made it so scary.

And this is coming from someone who hates watching horror movies. It's the closest that I will get to watching that is something remotely close to it.

@Todd You're welcome! Teizokurei Daydream is only a 4 episode OVA (the manga is a bit longer) and Boogiepop Phantom/Kemonozume are 13 episode series. Nice and short so they're easy to give a try without feeling like you have to commit to something larger lol~. I'd also agree with the Paranoia Agent rec, it's another shortie but a goodie. You'll have plenty to watch for quite sometime now! :D

Jigoku Shoujo and Shigofumi focus on the darker side of human emotions and society without having to resort to pointless gore so you might like those two, they're really good.

Ghost Hunt is good if you prefer ghost story mysteries, some episodes are lighter than others, the first case for example is pretty light, but it gets better.

Pet Shop of Horrors is a classic and Ayakashi is pretty good if you're into Japanese legends.
